i was looking to buy a few 28 pin sockets to make some dev carts for testing chips. where can i get these? i checked out jameco, but they have a bunch of different kinds and wasnt sure which one to buy. thanks
I think you are looking for a DIP 600mil socket. I'm not sure but I believe that is the correct size. But then again I'm going from memory. Pretty sure there isn't much variety in size.
I would go for low profile ZIF sockets, like this:

They are much easier when testing dev carts, as you don't have to worry about pulling out the chips and bending pins (which can be a problem if you're not careful with regular sockets).
Even with low profile ZIF sockets though I think you will still be cutting holes in your cartridge which would be more accessible anyway but I don't think the cartridge would close with chips inserted. But if you can afford it ZIF is a much better way to go if you plan to change the chip alot of times. A regular socket is better for tasks where changing will be uncommon but not necessarily never.
Just don't get the "machined pins" type and you'll be fine. Also most of the ZIF sockets I've seen won't work for this, but the one No Carrier posted looks good.
Actually I've found that you can take 2 of the cheapest sockets, leave one on the board and the other on the chip, and that makes it very easy to disconnect and reconnect them. Stacking 2 cheap sockets is the poor man's ZIF, heheh.
thanks, ill go with that blue one then
Yeah, those are really expensive! I got some cheap ones in a lot on eBay a few years ago - and noticed that "low profile" is the key when looking for ZIF sockets, anything else is too damn bulky.
i recieved the socket and tried it out, very nice! anyone looking for a socket, drop the extra couple of bucks for this one.
How well does it work with a toploader? Meaning like does a chip inside the socket clear the shell of the nes itself?
you still gotta cut a hole in the cart, its not that low
I've been making my mapper 0 devcarts with ribbon wire leading about a foot off the cartridge to a separate station with the sockets, thereby I can use it in any unmodified nes as well as change the rom without altering the carefully adjusted position of the cart.
