I bought a Famicom with Disk system on ebay,
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... Y.m238.lVI
now can can I plug it in and play or do need stuff to use it?
Do you have another RF switch, FDS game disk, a cable-ready TV, and some C batteries or an extra 9-12VDC AC adapter with center polarity negative? If so, and the FC and FDS both work, you're ready to play FDS games.
Congrats!
As for power, a Genesis 1 adapter (model 1602) is a very good match for either unit. I've used them with both my AV Fami and FDS for over a year without problems.
I thought that Japanese television was different enough to prevent it from working unmodified on a US NTSC set without modding the FC to output standard composite. It's my understanding that you won't get audio and video on the same channel on a US set. Or am I just wrong?
For the best chance of Famicom reception, set your TV to cable and look in channels 95 through 99.
Does it have AV out like the NES? and Do you a mean Sega Genesis adapter? Because I have one but not sure what model.

Only the last (rare) revision of the Famicom had AV out, IIRC through a connector similar to the one used by the Super NES, N64, and GameCube. The rest were RF-only.

Yes, a Sega Genesis adapter. It has to be the original model (1602 or 1602-1), though, the newer one (with the yellow tip, not sure of model number) is not compatible.

Are they really that rare? IIRC, Nintendo stopped producing them only a few years ago.
Is mine RF only? If you can tell from the pic.
No you don't.
The Famicom outputs RF only, and not on US channels 3 and 4. They output on Japan 1 and 2 or something like that, which means on a TV here you "might" find it around channels 95 or 96.
The SHARP Twin Famicom has AV out. The AV Famicom/1993 redesign has AV out. The SHARP Famicom Titler has S-Video. The NES has AV and RF. The NES2/1993 redesign has RF only.
So you need to make sure you can get the channel tuned in, or you need to perform an AV mod or buy another famicom.
It may take a little longer to get my FDS because my bank had a glitch.

I don't get any indication they're rare. I have 3 of them, 1 boxed, 2 loose.. and see them all the time in stores in Northeastern Japan. I didn't see many in Tokyo, but up here there's lots. Just one shop nearby has 10 of them in a pile for ~$25 each.

I'm quite certain that isn't the case. Otherwise you'd see a shit-ton more of them... I've also heard rumors the FC was being made last year. That's when they stopped repair/support for them, but I have no reason to believe they were still being BUILT then.
Well, they were at least available new in stores such as Toys R Us until maybe 2002, same with the Super Famicom.
Weird. I think the last console that old I saw past 2000 in Toys R Us was a Genesis 3, the one Majesco sold.
I think he was talking about in Japan. In japan systems seem to hang around longer where as over here they are tossed out the window quickly. The AV Famicom isn't "rare". Unless you mean "ebay rare" which means absolutely nothing other than I'm fucking desperate to sell this thing so I'm going to lie to you and tell you it is somehow hard to find despite that it is not. :p
Well put; HVC101s are harder to find than HVC001s but by no means is either one hard to find... I refrain from calling them "AV Famicoms" when I can since the box doesn't actually say that anywhere on it.. it does advertise having AV, but the name still reads in huge lettering, "FAMILY COMPUTER" and off in a corner, "AV".
Fine, call them 1993 Famicoms. New model famicoms. I wish I had one but they cost too much to justify it. Though they look weird with FDS systems.
Yeah I meant Toys R Us in Japan. They were even on their website and the final price was something like 7399円, great deal. It's because they were manufactured so late that they're still relatively easy to find still new as opposed to a "1983" Famicom which were manufactured until at least 1994 but are a few dozen times scarcer new.

The most expensive I've seen them is $45 (in Japan anyway) and they were price gouged. I got one boxed for $35 and a couple others loose with accessories for $30. Just find someone who will make you a good deal and not give you the eBay price.
Personally I think they look better with the FDS than the HVC001s do.

I'm a dead square honest Yankee and I get ripped off.

Exaggerating a little? $45, price gouged? You can easily find $120 AVFCs in Akiba or Den Den or Yahoo Japan. Sure they can be had for $45, but aside from backwoods shops probably not complete/mint.

$45 is price gouged when there is no box, no cables, no power brick. Just the unit and 2 controllers, no manuals either.
I've shopped in Akiba and compared it to Aomori prefecture area cities (like Hachinohe and Towada), which yes, is a fairly rural area. Here you'll find a loose HVC001 with all its hookups, manuals and box all in decent shape for about $20-$30. In Akihabara I saw yellowed HVC001s with no boxes, cables, power bricks or manuals going for close to $90. It was pretty ridiculous. Akihabara tailors to people prepared to buy lots of rare shit and not real retro gamers, people prepared to spend their whole paycheck on a game to keep it mint-sealed-in-box and never play it... but in this case it's just a case of classic profiteering as the condition was still SHIT.
That said you do need to shop around. I got a Mega CD Model 2 complete and barely used in the box for ~$80 and another shop wanted over $200 for the same. Outrageous. But in general considering average prices everything in Tokyo was 2-3x the price in Northeastern Japan e.g. Aomori.
