I recently bought a prototype of Balloon Fight which runs on NROM-128. I don't have the released version of Balloon Fight other than a ROM of it on my computer. So my question is: isn't the retail version of Balloon Fight running on NROM-256? The game code in it is quite different, but nothing in the graphics though.
No, the release version of Balloon Fight uses a NROM-128 board. The ROM size should be 24KB (16KB PRG + 8KB CHR.) NROM-256 boards produce 40KB ROMS (32KB PRG + 8KB CHR.)
But why does the ROM info on the emulator show 32kb PRG and 8kb CHR mapper 64, mirror V for the released version? My shows mapper 0, mirror H. What does Vertical/Horizontal Mirroring mean?
Because your ROM is a hack, not the release version. The real ROM uses mapper 0 and horizontal mirroring (not that it matters much when the game doesn't scroll the screen.

Balloon Trip anyone?
Oh, you're absolutely right! Didn't realize that. Ok, the prototype is identical to the released version then
