Benheck and the search for the replacement NES connector

A (much too) long set of youtube videos:
part 1 (don't bother) , part 2 (don't bother) , part 3 (shows the final result; shown from 1m50s through 4m)

He disassembles a NES and tries to (and eventually succeeds at) design a replacement actual ZIF socket for the NES. Unfortunately, then he puts it in incredibly ugly case. And something like 30% of the videos are product placements for element14 (née Newark). Even so, I think his replacement socket and loader is pretty awesome—it reminds me of the VCRs the front-loader was trying to look like.

He definitely could've designed that case better. Looks like there is a ton of dead air space, not to mention the footprint of the case is at least twice the length of an original NES. Would make it awfully hard to find a place for it in an entertainment center.

A neat idea for sure, but I think he could've put together a better final product with a design overhaul.

These guys may have done just that for the connector :

Because I almost exclusively use flash carts with my NES and my connector has not been causing me problems, I have not signed on. Plus there is something about pushing the cartridge down that can't be replaced.

I like their new solution. But personally all I've ever had to do was clean my cartridges. The original connector works fine.
