NES / Rock Music Similarities [PART 2]
by on (#105375)
I'm doing another one of these, so I'm reviving this thread. Go here for Part 2, otherwise look at this page to see what was already suggested.

Here's what I have so far: NES / Rock Similarities - Part 2

Part 2 is done! https://youtu.be/L8DaOUnpWS4

Do some NES games remind you of classic rock songs?

Or vice versa?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=haU2_lAfT1c

I realized I screwed up at the Rush - Freewill entry.

I'm going to be making an update to this video, so any suggestions to add are highly welcomed!

Finally got around to this! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2R5rrWpUNE

And I used couple from here, thanks guys! :)

Thanks again, guys! :D This has been the most helpful place I've posted this.

Indeed, Classic rock inspired many game soundtracks, especially for Japanese musicians.

The Zelda title and underworld music were inspired by Deep Purple's "April."

Ninja Gaiden's ending was also a copy of "What is a Youth" on the 1969 Romeo & Juliet soundtrack.

There are plenty more like this...

"Fever" from Dr. Mario is "Lady Madonna" by the Beatles.

Not only was the love theme music used from Romeo & Juliet, but Ryu Hayabusa is modeled after Leonard Whiting.

PROBABLY A SPOILER!

With Japanese character names like "Rock" and "Roll", it doesn't seem to be a secret that music from the NES period was heavily influenced by the music of that time. Even most of the upbeat music from the NES action games were conducted in the same meter as rock.

I always wondered if the SMB underground was inspired by the middle section of Miles Davis' Calypso Frelimo:

Based on that speculation, I snuck it into my SMB underground variations cover at last year's Famicompo:

Here's another one from the Dr. Mario Chills theme.

"Chill"? Don't get me started about similarities between this part and the theme from 3-2-1 Contact and "Pray" by MC Hammer.

Oh, and "Lady Madonna" isn't the only song that Hip Tanaka nicked for "Fever". Compare the end of "Fever" to the beginning of "Bad" by Michael Jackson (find it yourself because Sony Music Entertainment and VEVO like to region-code their videos). And guess who owns the rights to both the Lennon/McCartney and Mijac repertories.

Speaking of "don't get me started", here's the previous topic on recycled music.

Yeah, Dr. Mario always reminded me of St. Thomas as well.

Though, it might also be worth noting that the melody of St. Thomas is based on a Virgin Islands version of a traditional English tune called The Lincolnshire Poacher. (Which was also used by a mysterious radio signal.)

I always thought Dwelling of Doom from Simon's Quest and Yngwie Malmsteen's Far Beyond The Sun sounded kinda similar. Dunno which was released first though.
Re: NES / Rock Music Similarities

Far Beyond the Sun: 1984
Castlevania II: 1987.

You think that's a copy? Here's Ys IV's (1993) blatant theft of Malmsteen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IehWUs_RioQ

Hey, thanks! I'll definitely use that one.

I found another one (heard the instrumental on the Wall Street Journal This Morning)! :o Tell me this doesn't scream Double Dragon II:

Apparently I'm not the only one who made this comparison:

http://www.destructoid.com/blogs/trunxk ... 4567.phtml

But I haven't had anymore NES -> Rock comparisons. Does anyone know of any?
Re: NES / Rock Music Similarities

I finally updated it! :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2R5rrWpUNE

But good God! It seems I can never make videos under 5 minutes anymore! :x I'm thinking about taking some of these entries out. In particular:

Lady Madonna -> Dr. Mario (though 'Lady Madonna' influenced Hip Tanaka, I can't find a short-enough sample that's good enough to use for a comparison)

Edgar Winter Group "Frankenstein" (both these are kinda vague)

Depeche Mode "Just Can't Get Enough" -> Tecmo Bowl (Don't know what I was thinking; I think all the sounds in Tecmo Bowl just remind me of Depeche Mode)

Anyone have any suggestions?

Nothing beats the Mama Luigi song.

Not NES, but the PSX game Wild Arms pretty blatantly rips melodies from Ennio Morricone:

Original (one of the best songs of all time, IMO): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubVc2MQwMkg
Re: NES / Rock Music Similarities

That makes sense to me; Wild Arms did seem to have a lot of spaghetti western elements to it.

A good Nigerian friend of mine at work was playing this song, and it has an unmistakeably similar bridge before it goes into the chorus and verses.

See if you can pick it out.

Lucky Dube - Different Colors released in 1993.

tepples would also get a kick out of this... :)

Has it been 3 years already?!

Oh yeah, that's right-- time moves. Anyway, it looks like I may have enough new entries to make another video compilation. Here's what I have so far:

???? Ballad of John and Yoko -> ???? Donkey Kong "25m"
1966 Simon & Garkunkel "Scarborough Fair" -> ???? Bill & Ted's Excellent Video Game Adventure (Medieval World)
1967 The Beatles "When I'm Sixty Four" -> 1990 Rescue Rangers (Zone B) [not sure about this one]
1976 Thin Lizzy "Massacre" -> 1990 Silver Surfer (Stage 1) [not close enough, but I used it for the intro]
1976 Kiss "Shout it Out Loud" -> 1990 Mega Man 3 "Dr. Wily Stage 1" [what was I thinking?]
Paul McCartney & Wings "Jet" -> 1992 TMNT 3 "Break Down"
1980 Queen "Another One Bites the Dust" -> ???? Pictionary (Mini-Game 1)
1982 Billy Joel "Pressure" -> 1990 Castlevania III "Pressure"[didn't sound similar enough to me]
1985 Phil Collins "Sussudio" -> 1989 Double Dragon II "Escape to the Forest" [barely sounded similar]
1986 Bon Jovi "You Give Love A Bad Name" -> 1989 Super Spike V'Ball "Exercise"

And here are some exceptional NES -> Rock similarities:

1986 Castlevania "Stalker" ----------------------> 2010 Avenged Sevenfold "Nightmare"
1989 Ninja Gaiden "A Decision -Father's Letter-" -> 2005 System of a Down "Dreaming" [couldn't find a good match]
1990 Dash Galaxy ---------------------------------> 2009 Ewan Dobson "I Know Your Pain"
1990 Last Ninja "Final Battle" -------------------> 1999 Korn "Falling Away from Me"

Last time you guys were a really great help. If you have some more suggestions, I'll be really grateful. (and I'll credit you individually this time instead of just NESdev )

Scarborough Fair is actually centuries old. Simon & Garfunkel wrote and added the canticle (pedantically, not really a canticle, which seems to be a term meaning "took an existing melody and applied new lyrics to it")

Here's what I have so far: NES / Rock Similarities - Part 2

As you can see, I had just enough to scrounge up another video, but it's just 13 comparisons (and two of them are Elec Man!). :o Last one had over 30! I'd be happy to get around 20 this time.

Thanks to anyone who can help. :)

I don't know if someone else have told you or you have already seemed it, but the music on Totally Rad Stage 2 sound a lot like ZZ-Top's La Grange, at least to me.
Re: NES / Rock Music Similarities [PART 2]

Wow! I've never played Totally Rad before. Looks like a cool game.

Act 1 also sounds a bit like Motley Crue's Dr. Feelgood. :o

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll credit you.

Thank you! That's, like 19 now.

I also remembered Earthbound Hippie and Johnny B. Goode. :) R.I.P. Chuck Berry. :(

Edit: It looks like I have a decent amount of comparisons now, thanks again to you guys! If anyone has anything else to add, please post it now.
