Thought this may be of interest here. Kent Hansen (SnowBro) recently posted a video on YouTube on how he creates NES music:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4usxbg17Wg
The gist of it is he uses FastTracker 2 and converts them to an NES ROM/NSF with a custom tool, xm2nes (XM to NES).
He also posted the source code to his tools and song data. There's a 6502 assembler and linker, XORcyst, in one repository:
http://repo.or.cz/w/xorcyst.git
The code to xm2nes along with a bunch of songs (in XM format), including those used in D-Pad Hero, is in another repo:
http://repo.or.cz/w/kents-nes-stuff.git
