NSF Player/Creator for Windows 95?
by on (#32219)
I don't have regular access to a great, or even good computer right now. So it'd be cool if any of you knew where a standalone NSF player/creator could be found that work with a really old windows 95 laptop. It's a Toshiba that I'd say is about 8 to 10 years old. 16mb RAM. Not sure about the processor speed right now.

As for creators I've tried:
NerdTracker - Crashes REAL hard.
Famitracker - Fails to create new document.

Players:
Nosefart - crashes hard.
Festalon - Seems to work, except there's no output. (Can't hear it)
nsfplay - loads, but none of the buttons do anything.

It's the only computer I can really use right now, so thanks in advance.

(Emulator suggestions would be nice as well, though that may be for a different topic. NESTICLE seems to hate it, and others run too slow. I don't necesarily need a super accurrate emulator. Just a fast one, that'll run a lot of things.)

For NSFs, I'd recommend this:
www.angelfire.com/nc/ugetab/fceuxdsp_1_07_NSF.rar

I updated some of the NSF internals so it's more compatible with NSFs, among other NSF-specific updates.

You should also grab a version of FCEUXD if you want a greater range of game compatibility than SP provides. For some reason, the original SMB doesn't work on the newest debugging version.

If you have a really old PC, go with LoopyNES. It even plays NSFs.

You might even have more luck booting up in DOS mode and using an old DOS emulator. I rememember Nesticle running at full speed (or at least very much playable) on a really old 486 laptop with 12MB of RAM. Things will probably be slower when windows is running.

You can also try an old 2.xx version of Winamp and use the Nosefart plugin. I have a 2.xx Winamp version on my site somewhere, that you can download.

I used to rip NSF's on a machine that had Windows 95 along time ago.

For authoring NSFs: mck (I prefer ppmck)

LoopyNes is exactly what I wanted as far as emulators are concerned.

I think I'm going to need to update a bunch of things on the old computer to use the nsf programs that do what I want.

FCEUXD, I believe tells me that I need some form of direct draw. (It could be another error. I'm on a public computer away from home so I can't check.)

I'm sure it'll work fine once I update some things, so there's not too much need for more help. Thanks for the quick, helpful replies. They were a warm welcome.
