Where does one begin
by on (#17177)
For the past few months ive been listening to the intense 8bit chip tunes. I live right outside detroit and i havnt been able to stop listening since the Detroit electronic music festival(DEMF). Anyways out of all the techno and electronic music i danced to i was caught by the 8bit stuff.

To my question, im wondering where do i begin, what do i buy. After looking into all of this there is so much behind the music im bewildered at the amount of information ive been givin, so i found this forum threw searching and im wondering, where do i start. I was thinking about one of those Nanoloop 1.3(for OG gameboy) or a Nanoloop 2.1(gameboy advanced & DS). Is this a wise place to start? Any pointers tips or tricks would be appreciated.

You shouldn't have to buy anything. If NES music interests you, you can try Famitracker for Windows.

I never knew about Nanoloop - must look into this.

I would check out:

http://www.vorc.org/ - great chiptune site for all types of music
http://www.2a03.org - a forum and an archive for NES music

I agree with Jedi QuestMaster, you really don't need to buy anything to get started. There are a number of tools and programs out there that will allow you to compose and create your own music. As far as Nanoloop, midiNES, etc - those cost money, and allow you to play the music in public in a more "live" sense. I guess it depends on what you want to do with the music you create.

Good luck.

I don't think there's a Mac version of Famitracker, though the source is available for anyone who wants to try porting it. You could use NerdTracker II with DOSBox, if you wanted. Or, if you're a decent coder, you could just write your own playroutine and fly blind with regards to composing.

...? Are you just saying you want to use professional music software to create 8-bit style songs? If so, I'd just use ModPlug Tracker rather than pay money for higher-level software. For creating 8-bit-style music, there's really no need for high-end music software.
