NT2 Freezing issue?
by on (#11887)
Hi everyone. I'm new to the whole NT2/nes music scene.. gotta say, I love the program. Easy to use, and it sounds terrific! Anyhow, I have an issue with it. Everything operates in the program perfectly fine, and I can load songs that also run perfectly fine... however, after running the program for say, 5-15 minutes, it freezes my entire computer. I can't ctrl+alt+del or anything like that... I have to restart my computer.

I'm running Windows XP, Intel Pentium 4 proc.(1.99ghz), 512mb ram, and a Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2 soundcard. I see no apparent connection to the freezing.. other than when sound is playing.. I really don't know. Any suggestions?

Oh.. also, is it possible to use NT2 via MIDI (as in a MIDI keyboard)?

EDIT: If it matters, I'm running NT2_Win32.exe not NT2.exe because NT2.exe runs sluggishly... lags and skips a LOT... but the Win32 one runs smoothly.

With that much computing power, you may want to consider switching to Winamp with the NotSoFatso plugin. Here's an updated version that works well as a player:

I can keep even individual songs going for an hour without any significant errors, if I'm busy enough to leave it running that long.

It's not the .nsf player that freezes; it's the .ned editor.

I haven't had it freeze on me at all, but my fan does turn on in my computer about 1 minute after turning it on. I notice that when I run NT2, there's an application called csrss.exe that is running about 98% CPU power (which I find really weird after reading what it is. Maybe it has something to do with that? Not sure... but no freezing on this end. Mind you I'm also referring to the Win32 version.

CSRSS takes up so much time because NT2 constantly rewrites the entire screen, and CSRSS has to render each glyph. If NT2's screen updates were a bit more optimized (possibly using dirty lines), then it might become more CPU friendly.

Honestly I don't think I've even ran NT2 for 15 straight minutes since the win32 .exe was made. This is the first time I'd heard of any problems.

If it becomes a major annoyance, you could try installing VDMSound and running the DOS version with that (full-screen mode is recommended also).

Your computer freezes, and Roth's fan speeds up, maybe it's an overheating thing. But well, if you run other CPU-intensive stuff without problems then I doubt it could be that. My last PC would freeze up during CPU intensive stuff, but that turned out to be due to a bunch of defective capacitors on the mainboard.

(CPU) Can you run the distributed.net client or the Seventeen Or Bust client without problems?

(PPU) Does the lockup also happen when you run NT2_Win32.exe in fullscreen mode (Alt+Enter)?

Have you heard of FamiTracker yet? Check it out here:

It runs wells on Windows and has a lot of nice features. I know this response doesn't help you with your original problem, but perhaps you'll like FamiTracker even better ;) There is also ongoing support/updates/chat about it on the 2a03.org forums.

The release of FamiTracker that I have allows for binrary data exporting. Is that what you're asking? I have to admit, although I love making NSF's and NES music, I haven't tried to use them in demos yet. I've only put them on NROM carts and booted them with blank screens.
