converting MIDI to NSF - is this possible?
by on (#9180)
let me start by saying:
yes, i'm a complete n00b to making NES music.

i'm involved in a project making music for a series of NES RPGs that never existed - we have MIDI files all laid out - no more than 3 notes at a time. i did it all in garageband on my mac (i have access to a PC) - but i can't get that square wave bass sound out of the MIDI softsynths. now i know the NES instruments are accessed through NFS files or something, and that MIDI is completely unrelated to NES music. i was hoping there was a converter of some sort that i could use to get these MIDIs inside an NSF editor to achieve the true NES sound, as we have an entire RPG soundtrack laid out in MIDI.

are there any free/cheap PC programs that could i could import these MIDIs into and convert them to the NES instruments? that is, import MIDI files, have the tracks separated out, and being able to manipulate the tracks like a regular sequence editor - only with the NES instruments? also, is there a way to export these NFS files as AIFs or WAVs or whatever, so they could play in regular players.

any help on this front would be gratefully appreciated!

You can make .nsf with NerdTracker II or Famitracker, but you can't "just convert a MIDI file" yet. You can convert .nsf to .wav using Winamp with any NSF input plug-in and the Disk Writer output plug-in.

There is MIDI2MML, but it isn't very pratical.

http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~tom7/midimml/

You could also look around in the forums and file section at http://2a03.org/ if you haven't yet.

Tell me, is there a copy of this page and its software? The site was closed:

Just use web.archive.org.
Seems that some of the files are retrievable but I'm not sure whether the archived ones are the most updated versions.

If you just want to produce some NES-like fakebit for a PC game or something, get yourself a copy of a plugin such as the Nintendo VST or even Super Audio Cart, in case you're willing to spend. Going down the tracker and/or MML route probably isn't worth it unless you absolutely want to do everything as authentically as possible.
Now, if you do want complete authenticity just bite the bullet and learn Famitracker. MML or MIDI converters are probably going to be more of a hassle than transcribing a few songs in Famitracker, unless you're already used to MML, I guess.

Who have used the MIDI2MML utility - write me, how to register commands in CMD to do program works, or has this program GUI version?
