Just noticed Anita Sarkeesian of Feminist Frequency has finally published Tropes vs Women in video games: Damsel in distress: part 1
I found it cool to see such a detailed critique of that steretype in classic games from someone who is herself a fan of them, and seeing all those introductory kidnapping scenes from the old classics lined up like that sure made them look even more silly than they already are.
At the same time I gotta admit that in a weird way I somewhat enjoy the camp value of the damsel-in-distress cliche in classic video games, just because it feels like such a cheesy (although sad) reflection of the times. And to no surprise it's a generous subject for parody in retro-style games as well... for my own game, I've planned to include a humorous dude-in-distress backstory to parodize the theme.
Looking forward to part 2 of this episode... anyone else here that does?
