Very interesting.
In the United States, we have ATM cards, which can be swiped for PIN transactions but don't work for signature transactions or mail order. They don't have a number.
We also have prepaid cards, which work for signature transactions and mail order but do not work in the obsolete carbon-paper machines that some merchants still use. They have a number that's printed, not embossed. Some credit cards that work only in one department store also have a printed number.
