I've got an european version of K.I. however the passwords on the internet (kidkidicarus kidkidicarus) arent' working. Is this because it's pal?
Are you playing it on an emulator, or the real thing? If you're playing it on an emulator, it might be hacked or something.
Nope real deal. Pal nes. I'm 100% sure I entered the code correctly.
You say you're entering kidkid icarus kidkid icarus. I've never played the game, but it looks as if the passwords are case sensitive. So are you sure you're not entering this? I just want you to be sure:
KidKid Icarus KidKid Icarus
I entered this: "KidKid Icarus KidKid Icarus" (wich worked in the emulator)
I don't really know why the PAL version would do that. That's really strange. I honestly have no idea what to say then. I googled to see if there was anything different about the PAL version, such as the cheat codes, but I couldn't find anything. It could be that the pins in your game aren't making consistent contact with the pin connector in your system, but that's just a guess.
Edit: "It could be that", not "I could be that".
well I just refurbed those a few days ago. I have ZERO grafical glitches (wel one or two but those are just from scrolling)
edit: also the passwords I get IN GAME work. Just not the internet ones. (none)
This should have been posted to general, and the subject should have been more informative, something like "Kid Icarus passwords not working".
Sorry blargg. Didn 't realise. Ok move it.

Pins can do that? That's really weird.
Well that was a wild guess. There apparently was some hardware in the cart for the passwords though
I was merely suggesting that the cart wasn't positioned correctly, or that data wasn't being transfered through the pins correctly. If that were the case, many things could happen. If they're PRG related, most incorrect data transfers can be catastrophic, so I actually doubt this is the case. If the game works, it's most likely data is being transferred correctly. One wrong bit can wreck everything. I don't know too much about NES hardware, so I may sound ridiculous stating some of these things. But really, one wrong bit could ruin everything.
Okay, there is NO PAL version of Kid Icarus, the PAL version is the EXACT SAME ROM as the NTSC version, only with a different CIC. So this makes absolutely NO sense. Also I've never seen that Kidicaruskidicarus password. There is one with a lot of u's (it was something like uuuuuuuuuuuuu8) and another that said "ICARUS FIGHTS MEDUSA ANGLES" or soemething close to this. (all in caps).
That madusa password doesn't work either
There is a classic Swedish code you could try for the game that goes:
DUVANS MAMMOR KOMMER BORTOT
In Swedish that's basically a nonsense sentence roughly translated to something like:
The pidgins mothers is coming towards
Please note that BORTOT (towards/in the direction of) is really spelled BORTÅT in Swedish but it's pronounced the same.

Nope. Mmmmmmmm it seems Nintendo used "regional" passwords?
This cannot be since the Kid Icarus ROM is the exact same arround the whole world (exept the FDS japanese version of course). There is no such thing as a PAL ROM, it's just the NTSC ROM thrown on a PAL cartridge.
ya but according to all the news when the vconsole version came out they had a special chip in the cart that does the passwords. Thats why all the old passwords didn't work on the vc console.
If they said this they are big liers, because there is no special chip in any Kid Icarus cart. All KI cards have the most standard NES-SNROM board arround, and have no such thing as a special chip. And only the CIC differ between regions, not the ROMs.
well it's all over the internet. Mmmmm so Nintendo lied ey
.
The Virtual Console doesn't have any of the chips the NES/cartridge has, so they could be deceptively referring to any standard chips in the NES/cartridge. Or maybe the game depends on some obscure aspects of the hardware that the VC doesn't emulate, and they didn't bother patching the game code? BTW, "VC Console" is redundant.
Ya that was a typo I mean to type: vconsole. Anyway I guess that could be it. But that means my rom ISN'T just an NTSC rom with a pal lockout. Like bregalad said. Cause the passwords are different.

Well, mine is.

Sure, but if the MMC1 had an obscure password feature in it, Kid Icarus wouldn't be emulated as it is currently. I doubt the CIC have a secret password either. So only 2 standards RAMs are left, which are not special chips since they're standard RAMs. So yeah, passwords are in ROM, yay !
It's possible that other (rarer ?) versions of Kid Icarus are arround after all. Mine is NES-KI-0 PRG. Even though it's a PAL cartridge, it sure is the same as the american one, but I don't know if there is any other arround.
According to boo the pal version is different. Also to his advice I check the prg rom version. It's nes-ki-1 prg. According to boo it's undumped.....
Ha, then you have a different Kid Icarus than everyone, you should have a revised cart. Did they fix the music and gameplay to PAL timing.
I'm not sure how the american version sounds or plays really. But it seems to run smooth.
Yeah, but on the PAL system the sound play significantly lower and slower than supposed. While this isn't a really big issue, you'd still hear the difference (especially the fact that it's slower).
Checked in emulator. Ya the sound is a bit slower on pal. But there isn't a whole lot you can do about that.
Maybe the passwords you found are just wrong? Try PAKING PAKING PAKING PAKING
That puts you in the final dungeon with lots of goodies. After you beat that dungeon you'll be on the final level. Like most people here, I'm only aware of one Kid Icarus ROM which is used in both US and Europe.
Tried PAKING PAKING PAKING PAKING already, just the same: "password error". Again, boo said this version was not dumped. So maybe it's "rare" or something?

Or a proto
It DOESN"T look like a proto, but it has a different rev.........how would I know if this was a proto?
A proto would not have revision 1 mask ROMs.
Either way, it hasn't been dumped yet. If you can find a way to do it, that'd be swell.
I believe piteta has dumped it:
http://bootgod.dyndns.org:7777/profile.php?id=1975
But I don't think he has released it yet.
I've heard some protos have no passwords working due to experiments. An example of this "Guisheya kenya kenya! Migupo!". About it being dumped there, why can't you download it and they should remove "bootgod.dyndns.org:7777" from the images.

looks like the same board. Altough mine has a different label. (the american one if I recall.)
Sorry to bump. Got the game dumped with my freshly installed copynes. Just wondering what protocol on this kinda thing is in terms of putting it online. (i'm kinda worried i'll get sued though)
Don't post the whole rom because it's copyrighted. This goes double if it's in Virtual Console or Brawl.
In practice, if you can produce an
IPS file between a well-known dump from GoodNES and your dump, that should be acceptable.
So I just take my dump use that program to compare it to another. And it makes the file? Cool.
DONE

edit: make sure you patch the ntsc version of the rom!
edit2: Kid icarus (pal) Rev A..prg D67FD6A6
Kid icarus (pal) Rev A..sav E3CD4E77
checksums
I've been updating my Password Generator to handle Kid Icarus. There seems to be only 2 differences between the normal NTSC game's passwords and the game from the IPS patch. The first difference, is that weapon data is stored at a slight bit offset. The other difference is that the most significant bit of the Checksum is stored where, in the newer game, the 0xF0 masked portion of a semi-random value from memory is stored. In both games, the 0x0E masked portion of the same value is kept. There's also a matter of the new Checksum portion being stored after the known one, but that's just logic, as the random value can be summed, but the Checksum value can't be.
I'm quite sure I've gotten it very close to correct from these codes:
See Best Ending:
NTSC:
6eW3!P 9cdF00
FFsO8H aA0W9c
REV 1(or Wii Virtual Console):
A8X6!P 9cdF00
FDsO8H aA0W9y
I got the program done a bit quicker due to the fact that Gamefaqs had experimental VC codes to work with, which turned out to be compatible with the new version just released.

Whoot thanks man i'll try these codes soon!
edit: yay they work perfectly, I finally beat kid icarus
