Perhaps it's just me being slow to not find out about this until several months after, but I just dicovered that a Dragon Quest-like retro version of Okami is available at the Okami official japanese site.
Incredibly cute, but the best part of this homage to the NES is that in the game, you can download NES-like MP3:s of the most memorable songs in the Okami soundtrack! There was one hidden song like this in the official soundtrack released, and I remember wanting to hear more at the time. Seems my wish just came true.
And out of coincidence, I just bought this superb game earlier this day after noticing the PAL version has now been released over here. Now I just have to buy a PS2 cheap somewhere to be able to re-play it once again, non-pirated this time. Until then, this will make a neat substitute. :)
For those of us who can't make out a single bit of the japanese, you can get all the retro tunes in an archive:

I sure wish someone would rip and translate this retro game... =P
