Commercial NES ROMs released as freeware
by on (#198247)
Is there any NES ROMs (or from other consoles for that matter) that have been released as freeware with the permission of the copyright owner?

An example is Codemasters/Oliver Twins who have released the previously unreleased NES-games Dreamworld Pogie and Mystery World Dizzy.

Dreamworld Pogie: http://www.dreamworldpogie.com/
Mystery World Dizzy: http://yolkfolk.com/mwd/

Wondering if there is any other copyright owners that have released games as shareware, freeware, etc.

The NES version of Elite was released as freeware, as well as some of the Wisdom Tree games. (On the side, Super 3D Noah's Ark got a Steam release)
John Romero also posted the GBC version of Daikatana on his website, but it's not there anymore.

Are you referring only to pre-1997 NES games or also to NES games sold on cartridge since then?
