Question about Eeproms and mappers
by on (#162894)
Hi, i got a quick question i hope someone can help me with.

I just flashed 2 x Atmel AT27C010 (datasheet here http://www.atmel.com/images/doc0321.pdf)
with chr and prg rom data and now that im looking to solder the roms onto my doner board i got kinda confused.

the EEprom conversion list for SLROM

says the followring.

Code:
SLROM (mapper 1):
PRG socket:
Bend up pins 1, 2, 24, 30 and 31 (or cut tracks)
Solder pin 2 to hole 24 (A16)
Solder pin 24 to GND (OE)
Solder pin 30 to hole 1 (A17)
CHR socket:
Bend up pins 1, 2, 22, 24, 30 and 31 (or cut tracks)
Solder pin 2 to hole 24 (A16)
Solder pin 22 to hole 31 (CE or CHR /A13)
Solder pin 24 to hole 2 (OE or CHR /RD)

My question is this. do i just simply count the pins on the 27C010's and holes on the board and solder it or do i do it accordingly to pin-configuration (ie A16, 0E, A13 etc)

The main reason this confused me is that the numbers in the guide does not correspondent to whats on the pinout of the rom and there is no A17 at all on the 27C010 rom.

Thanks in advance - Jiggy

Go by pin config if you understand how that works, otherwise just go by pin #/hole #. It should work either way, but you can save yourself a bit of work if you know the minimum you need to do.

Those instructions are kind of catch-all, meaning they include instructions to wire up larger chips and ignore the fact that some of it is irrelevant for smaller chips. In your case if you had '020 or bigger chips, pin 30 is A17 and needs to be jumped. On your chips it doesn't matter what you do with pin 30 since it's not connected (NC).

Thanks for clearing that up!
Im gonna try go by the pin # and see where it gets me, in a worse case scenario i guess i could post a picture of the outcome to get some experienced eyes on it.

So i wired up the board according to the # and left out pin 30 to hole 1
I connected pin 24 to hole 16 along with pin 16 since its GND on the chip and the board.
I ended up breaking a few pins but managed to get them connected anyway.
The soldering is godawful but i checked the connections and there seems to be no shorts or loose connections.
I have tested the cart but it comes up with a grey screen.

Heres a picture of my crappy work.

What did you do with pin 1 on the prg chip? It should be bent up at the very least, even if you aren't rerouting pin 30.

I cut it

You could also connect it to 5V or GND. Doesn't really matter as long as it's not a 27c080.

First off I want to say it is very hard to say where your wires are going on the chr pin/hole 24.

Anyhow that wire you are using looks to be aluminum copper clad (junk wire). I could be wrong but I see no copper in the blue wire that is wide open. Some wire from china is made like crap.

Just because you have it soldered doesn't mean you are getting a connection. That ACC wire has a very minute amount of copper in the middle and odds are you are not making contact with it.

If you have a multi-meter check for continuity. I would also just trim the pins as they will catch on the shell.

edit: it also looks as if your wires on pin 24 and hole 24 could be touching on both chips. No wires can be touching each other or other pins.

CHR pin 24 is going to hole 2
CHR pin 2 going to hole 24

Yes the wire is pretty much junk that is stripped from a earlier project, but i get a connection when i use my multi-meter.

hole 24 wire and pin 24 wire is not touching each other on the chr rom
hole 24 wire and pin 24 wire is not touching each other on the prog rom but i still get a connection when measuring with my multi-meter
