Does anyone know the pinout for TC5316003CF - SMW2 Mask Rom?
by on (#155577)
Been scouring the net for a datasheet or pinout for Super Mario World 2's Toshiba 9548EAI TC5316003CF Mask Rom. I have a Japanese cart that I want to convert to English with a 27C322. I could alternatively use a 29F032 / 29F033 Chip with TSOP to Dip adapter, but still need the original pinout. If anyone happens to know, or know where such information is located, any help / advie would be greatly appreciated.

Could it be this? I am not sure.
Code:
8-bit SO 32/40 pin MASK ROM (GSU-1, GSU-2)
GND - 5V
GND - 5V
A20 - 5V
A21 - A22
A17 - 5V
A18 - /OE
A15 - A19
A12 - A14
A7  - A13
A6  - A8
A5  - A9
A4  - A11
A3  - A16
A2  - A10
A1  - /CE
A0  - D7
D0  - D6
D1  - D5
D2  - D4
GND - D3

sanni is correct. I've used that exact pinout to build a Kamek's Revenge cart out of a YI donor. Also, this thread probably belongs in the repro section.

Thanks for the posting. It is a GSU-2, so I'll give it a try and post back.

Thanks for the confirmation.

Sorry, am still new to these forums. I see the repro section and will post there.

My first attempt failed, so just want to get some more feedback before making a second run.

I found this image of the GSU 1 /2 maskrom pinouts in relation to sanni's post:

I then used this pinout for my TSOP 40 to DIP 36 adapter pinout:

As you can see, the mask rom and TSOP 40 to DIP 36 adapter have identical pinouts. Just the top 4 pins on the mask rom (pins 1, 2, 40, 39) are unused. I burned my rom to the adapter, it wrote correctly, everything matched up, but when soldered to the board all i got was the black screen, and the odd time i'd get garbbled graphics.

My questions are:
1. do I have to bridge the mask rom pins 1,2,4/20 & 40,39,38 when connecting to TSOP 40 to DIP 36 adapter pins 1 and 36?
2. Do I need to mirror the rom image on the chip? Rom is 2Mb (16Mbit), and the flash chip is 4Mb (32Mbit)? Not sure how the memory addresses are working on this board?
3. Anyone else have some general advice or previous experience using this combination of TSOP 40 and GSU 2 board?

You either need to mirror the ROM or else tie the highest address line on the TSOP chip to Gnd. Otherwise, a floating address pin will cause the ROM to randomly switch between the upper and lower halves of the ROM, and you've only programmed the lower half. If you mirror the ROM though, then it will have the identical data in both halves and it won't matter. Grounding the address line is still considered a best practice either way (and if you do, then mirroring won't matter).

Finally had some time to finish this project up and thought I'd post my results. It works perfectly. I used the TSOP 40 to 36 dip adapter and the pinouts line up perfectly. You can leave the top 4 pins disconnected on the pcb. All I had to do was mirror the image on the flash chip and it worked perfectly.
