NESmaker, the love and the hate...
by on (#239914)
Hey all - I know some folks here, new and old alike, are supporters of what we've tried to do for the community and NES development. I know some folks here, new and old alike, consider us some sort of adversarial force threatening some niche hobby or some such thing. For both sides of this, I get it. To each their own. But for those that are straddling the fence, not quite sure what to think yet, are cautiously optimistic or hopefully pessimistic, I figured I'd share a clip that demonstrates what people are doing with this thing, and it hasn't even been a full year yet.

Obviously from this, diversity is pretty broad, no one has been plagued with shovelware, and the Kickstarters for from-scratch devs this year have actually been up, maybe in some small part with the push of interest we've been trying to foster in this community.

Anyhow, enjoy this reel, and the rest of the (dumb, ironic, faux, parody) "award show"!

I watched the intro bit with all of the games, and they look really good! Sorta skimmed the rest of the video though. There are a lot of impressive achievements in those games.

Aw man I'm sort of jelly right now.

Nice going though, tons of great games were showcased! Maybe I'll try NESmaker someday.

Thanks guys! :-)

Understand, too, NESmaker is out contribution to this larger passion. If YOU have projects you want me, or us, or our entire community to know about, our whole growing user base is hungry for new NES experiences...and all of them are buying systems, eagerly anticipating new games to play on them! I hope that the NESdev community will this user base as a resource. Our goal here is all the same - more new cool NES games to play :-)

I took the time and watched the complete video but some of the entries shown in the introduction were not even presented. I guess a showcase of all the current entries with a quick explanation in a different video would have been a good idea (maybe that video already exist?).

And it seems "it can scroll" now? (that and another point that I forgot was one of your running joke through the video, and the commercial too).

Banshaku - not sure what you mean...the intro showed ALL the submissions. Obviously not everyone who submitted won.

Yeah, the running joke for a while was the series of trolling comments about how it couldn’t even do scrolling, effectively by people who didn’t understand what it was or how it worked. It became a joke within the community - even when someone would show a game with fluid scrolling, someone else would chime in “yeah, but can it scroll?” A lot of users even wanted a tshirt with that on it. Haha.

Thanks for checking it out :-)

What I meant is yes, in the intro it shows all the entries. I was expecting during the video that to some degree more details would have been given about all of them (winner or not), which was not the case.

So I just downloaded the batch and tried them one by one to have a better idea how they looked like. Some have potential once they will be polished.

It would be nice if there were indeed more mention of the other games (non-winners). The way I see it, a lot of people put a lot of work into the games so by only selecting just a handful of them (the winners) it really puts like everyone else in the dark.

I would go with the approach of "greatest good for the most amount of people", utilitarianism . In other words get the judges to play the games and ask them to say what they liked in those games, then you clip a bunch of those together and talk about each game for like 30 seconds or so.

In other words, you could just say "here are the winners" good day and only a few people feel as if they benefited form it, or you could say at least one positive thing from each game so that everyone who entered at least feels appreciated.

Just my opinion.
