It really depends on the art style you want to put forth. The
graphics-induced super-deformed art style inflates the head to make a face recognizable; a more proportional art style relies on things other than the face. Compare, for example,
Super Mario Bros. 3 to
Contra.

The 32x64 pixel frame is also wider than one might expect for NES, where characters rarely exceed 24 pixels wide. I'm under the impression that PPT is more of a Super NES pixel artist.
