Hello'
About 6 years ago I had a member here help me with a copynes installation.
I was a newbie to this hobby at the time and still am. I disappeared for the last 6 years due to private medical reasons and I now feel like trying to pick this project up again even though it is late.
[Disclaimer]
I am not quite sure where to post this but I have some questions regarding a very specific and important project. This requires some knowledge of the copynes as well as roms in general, EB history, and save data.
This site may not even be the most appropriate place to ask some questions but I am going to use what ever resources I know. If someone has a suggestion on a more proper place to discuss this please let me know. I hope I am not treading any sacred taboo ground by discussing this.[/Disclaimer]
So I wanted to bring this topic here from the starmen.net forums
Between me and Roo we dumped the prototype. We wanted to address some concerns about it and perhaps discover something new. The compiled .nes rom is a crc32 exact to the popular one found on the internet.
I do not think there is anything new to learn from this but feel free to correct me.
I do however have the save file. This is considered new and unexplored and unreleased unless Roo distributed it himself. He actually gave me permission to distribute it for the sake of exploring it however due to circumstances beyond my control I could not.
I am just some bloke with a copynes. This is where my basic knowledge ends.
A few things to remember is nobody knows who made the save on this cart.
It could be a Nintendo beta tester, The janitor who works for Nintendo, some kid who found it in a box. Perhaps even one of the owners of the cart did. Or even Itoi himself. Nobody knows for sure.
The save could have been altered by a beta tester for the sakes of beta testing without an in game debug menu. Only someone with the proper hardware could do this and only someone with knowledge of the game would be able to tell. (IE if sequences appear out of order, Equipment out of place, level or stat oddities)
[Disclaimer]
Reminder, This is not my field of expertise, please don't be mad if I say something stupid.
[/Disclaimer]
The save data in the WRAM of the proto cart could be in older than the actual game rom data.
What could prevent someone from removing chips, reprograming them and putting them back in as a different game version with old save data. This may clue us in on some information about the history of the games development.
Also if the above is plausible.
Nintendo would normally recycle their prototype carts.
If no one flushed the WRAM could there potentially be residual WRAM data from other prototype testing on this cart? The game would either play corrupted or not read this or know to read this data. The game may even clear this all out anyway. We most likely not be able to identify any game from this data but it may enlighten us that the cart had a history of being used to test other battery backed prototypes. Like I said this is not my expertise.
I would also like permission from the moderators here to post the .sav file (No game rom though)
Would anyone here be willing to take a look at this save data and perhaps be able to discover anything from it?
That's all for now
Thank you very much for your time.
