With all the spam that comes to this board, I wonder why it hasn't already been made a prerequisite that you're a member to post. There have been three new spam posts in just this evening (morning, whatever). I'm sure that if someone new is really wanting to program for the NES, they won't mind creating an account to get their questions answered. Thoughts?
Memblers, PLEASE do something. We cannot allow so much spams to invade our board. Back then, it was still okay, but now they exagerate.
If someone new comes to the boards and see that spams, they won't take us seriously.
For accoutumed people, having new thread with spam can be ignored/tolerated, but having spam respond to existing post, and additionnaly bring up old topics, it is really deplorable.
Even if you just appoint some regulars as moderators so that they can delete this shit...
Yeah, it's a never-ending struggle. Finding and removing spams isn't my idea of fun (today is my 25th birthday, the spammers are giving me a gift of grief, heh).
And I've been noticing more and more that phpBB's ban control is a total POS. I try to remove the old bans when adding new ones so the list doesn't become infinite, but it seems to randomly choose to add new bans to the top or bottom of the list.. I'm just assuming that a giant ban list is gonna overwork the server. Plus I think most spams are 'hit and run' basically (I'm seeing identical spams from different IPs). Quietust recommended a mod that improves it, I'll install it sometime eventually.
Forcing people to register won't stop the spammers, it might slow them down a bit. We're using probably the most popular forum software on the net, so it comes with the territory unfortunately. They even get past the captcha thing.
But yeah, I'll assign some moderators. tepples, you can be one if you want. And anyone else who's here as often or more often than me. Anyone else just reply here to apply. We won't need an army of mods, just a few good ones.
Bregalad makes a good point tho, if the spamfloods don't get under control it's gonna start to stink the place up.
Maybe have an image verification for posts made by guests would help. Might be a bit annoying seeing how many people have problems staying logged in though.
If you need moderators, that's no problem for me. I help mod the NES Files forum, and have limited admin rights there, so I know how to use phpBB pretty well... and I'm generally around. I'd think that you would probably want people who are more knowledgable about the topic of the entire board to be a mod, but if no one else ends up wanting to, I can help out.

Yes please.

I hope this doesn't start a flame war between Army ("An army of one") and Marines ("We're looking for a few good men").
Is there no plugins for phpbb to block post that includes link with specific words in the url? that could be pretty effective way of blocking atleast these latest spams
edit:
looked through the security things on the phpbb pages and there seems to be some intresting that might help:
http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/catdb.php?cat=57
some I found:
[2.0.13] disable spambots
This mod uses cryptographic signing techniques to ensure that any comment submissions have occurred from an appropriate
comment form (stopping simple random-submission bots)
[2.0.12] Visual Confirmation for Guests
Adds visual confirmation for guest posts, eliminating spam.
[2.0.18] Block Open Proxy Registrants
Blocks those attempting to register from open proxies.
(but this one can be troublesome for those members who isn't spamers and using proxies)
..I don't know, maybe this are not that good at all.. what do you all thinks?
Sometimes the visual confirmation things can get really hard to read.
If you do install "block open proxy registrants", make sure that the function to contact an admin works because people in some countries have to use open proxies in order to get an uncensored view of the Internet.
Oh, and thanks for the mod powers.
I can be a moderator, if you want. I'm not like the nerd who's dream is to be a NESdev moderater, but I am probably one of the top 5 users of NESdev. I think I have the highest posts per day, so that might tell you something. Can I be a moderator? Oh pick me! Pick me! If you don't want me to be, that's all fine and dandy. But I often see myself alone on these boards, so I think I'm here quite often. And we just got 3 more online casinos all in different forums.
Following a drive-by spamming from dozens of zombie PCs, all forums except "Test Forum" and "FCdev" have been restricted to disallow guest posting.
Finally. Many thanks. Now, even if spammers logs in, it isn't hard to banish them, and it will stop many of them I think. Only one or two spammer has logged in up to date.
how a spam can subscribe to phpBB if you have a image in order to verify that one people is subscribing!!!!!
i wanna creating a phpBB too.. because of this i ask..

The most common method is to
let random people solve CAPTCHAs for free porn.

Just in the past couple days I deleted about 6 spammer accounts. They could've logged in, but it seems they rarely post anything. They just put up links to shady sites in their profiles.
Another idea: Can you mod phpBB to use nofollow? If so, can you mod phpBB to use nofollow on all accounts with fewer than 15 posts so that we have at least some time to catch spammers?
I've temporarily banned anyone from signing up with a @mail.ru email address. If this affects anyone, just reply here (I've enabled guest posting for this part of the forum).
It's just getting old to have to keep deleting spam users (getting to be a few every day).. even if phpBB used the 'nofollow' thing, I don't want them polluting the user list.
