StarFox 2

I've ordered the following parts:
Stunt Race FX
27C801 OTP EPROM
32MHz Crystal (for overclocking the Super FX chip to make it run smoother)
I have some IDE cable on hand if it's necessary

Now I've got a few questions.
1. Is there a straightforward guide for rewiring the EPROM sort of like the one in the October 2009 NintendoAge eZine (wire pin X to pad Y)
2. Is there anything else I will need to complete this project (other than a soldering iron/solder which I have)?
3. I like this label, but I want to have some text like SNS-F2-USA with MADE IN JAPAN below it in that stylistic font that nintendo used in the bottom left (and possibly extend the earth to the bottom if it wouldn't mess it up too bad) instead of there being a huge black bar there (while retaining the proper dimensions). The below the nintendo logo and the bar on the end label that's missing would be cool if it could be added.

How do I go about doing this?

Here's a quick mod of the label I did.. Not sure if it'd wrap around the same like on a regular cart, otherwise I'm happy with it.

Ok, it sounds like your new rom carts but are you also new to soldering? If so then stay the hell away from Starfox 2 as your first cart(or atleast be prepared to go through 10 Stunt races before you get it right).

I HIGHLY reccomend trying something simple like Nightmare busters first.

But, if your hell bent on doing starfox, the best advice i can give is do each wire individually. It takes much longer BUT decreases the chances of screwing up.

Ive tried connecting all the wires to the eprom at once then to the board(like many guides say to do), but soldered one wire to the wrong place and then had to go back and do it all over again.

A 32mhz crystal is probably too much. If it were that easy then Nintendo themselves would have done it. You can overclock it over the normal 21mhz, but probably usually only bump it up a little bit.

I also must say if you have not done this sort of thing before, don't start with Star Fox 2. First just open a Super FX cartridge and realize just how small the pins are, and how big your iron is. And realize the board is fragile and you can easily pull a circuit trace up off the board either ruining it or requiring repair.

Making a Star Fox 2 cartridge is not for beginners. If you really want to play it, you could pay the inflated prices online for one. It's not so bad when you consider the cost of all the other materials and the fact that it's horribly unlikely you'll succeed yourself without alot of investment and destroyed cartridges.

Hmm... I was always satisfied with that label - & that's saying a lot for an obsessive person like myself.

I take it you'd also like to have a seal on that label as well? Because I can help you out on that part.

One thing on the artwork: SNS-F2 is an English serial, for Final Fight 2, there isn't a real serial for Star Fox 2, but I wouldn't use one that is actually a real game.

Good catch, Matt. :P

You could always do what Nintendo did when it ran out of 2-character codes: go to 4-character codes ending in E.

SNS-FX2E-USA

SNS-FX2E-USA

All US 4 character codes start with A; Japanese can start with A, B or Z. It's really just 2 digits padded to make them "different". As late as this was, it would start with B.

I was just saying though, it's not like it actually matters.

Thanks anyway for the info.

Yeah, because this is just as FAKE as the U.S. Virtual Console release of The Legend of Zelda (whose channel ID is actually FAKE). I suggested FX for Fox because "Fx" is the official abbreviation for the web browser I'm using to post this comment (which isn't Chrome or Opera).

Hey! I resent that kind of comment right when I've finished slaving over my own original Star Fox 2 reproduction label!

Wait, why is Fx the official abbreviation of Internet Exploder? :P
