convert PAL to NTSC
by on (#33015)
I have the game The Firemen for the SFC. There was also a version released in EUR in English. I know it is possible to take the PAL rom and put it on a NTSC cart, but will it run properly? Is there anything more I'd need to do to the rom first?

Thanks!

I can't tell. Most likelely gameplay speed won't be adapted, but few comercial games actually adapted it anyway. Sound speed will be allright because the SPC timers are identical on NTSC and PAL, but however some sound effects may get out of synch with the CPU and things like that. Most likely nothing catastrophic will happen, but some modern Nintendo games have security implemented. As long as the game wasn't developped by the big N you should be fine.

If no PAL adaption was done, the only thing you might want to do is check if it is region locked. Despite NTSC and PAL having different lock out chips, probably because of those piggyback/T-Connector adapters many games will check a register to find out if the system is NTSC or PAL and may refuse to run if there is a mismatch.

A good way to find out is load the rom in SNES9x or ZSNES and use the "Force NTSC" option.

I went ahead and force NTSC and it seems to run perfectly fine.

Maybe I won't have any trouble! :)

Thanks!
