Tales of Phantasia

Hi guys! I want to translate my Tales of Phantasia, I read many times how to build a repro using a particular pcb: 1J3M-20 but I want to use the game original pcb as the donor (LJ3M-01).

I do have some eeproms (29F033) and Mr Tentacle adapters ( https://www.tindie.com/products/mrtenta ... m-adapter/ ) ready to use, but I've been reading that in order to use tales pcb as donor the eeproms+adapters goes in a different way, eeprom 1 goes on top and the 2nd one goes at the bottom.

Could you tell me if I'm doing it right:

Check that rom has no header.

Apply the translation to the rom.

Split the rom in two parts ( I use an free app, File Splitter), the app generates the two files, first one is 32mbit and 2nd one is 16mbit.

Burn and verify files as normal.

Solder eeprom A 32mbit in the top (U1) and the eeprom B 16mbit in at the bottom (U0).

I believe there is no need to rewiring anything or remove pin 33 from the header on the 1st eeprom??

Does it look good?

Thanks for your support!

Don't destroy an original cartridge of Tales of Phantasia ! They're not common enough to be worth destroying just so that you can play the translated version on your SNES. Use a Flashcart instead ! Also an original cartridge of Tales of Phantasia is probably as expensive if not even more expensive than a Flashcart !

If you're going to butcher a SNES cart anyway, at least do so with a less common game and modify the PCB to be compatible with TOP.

Converting a "1J3M" board to act like the "LJ3M" needed is easier than replacing the ROMs in the first place.

The default MAD-1 wiring connects what nocash calls "Addr2" (pin 13) to A21, and if there are multiple ROMs, connects two 2MB ROMs to the two chip enables (pins 16 and 1). "exhirom" on LJ3M instead needs "Addr2" connected to A23, and the larger always-4MB ROM connected to pin 1.

Thank you very much for your advise, just for the record I wouldn't describe it as butchering or destroying it, I will take it in consideration and find a compatible or more common pcb board.
