SNES video connector terminal pin type?

I've seen a lot of documents that give the pinout for the video connector, but none actually say what type of physical pins are being used. Is it known if they're proprietary, or can they be ordered from somewhere like Digi-Key? The wires for one of my SNES / N64 / GC video cables are in pretty bad shape, so I figured I'd wire another cable.

As far as I know, the pins/terminals themselves are considered part of the multi-out connector (not physically, just as a product), which is entirely proprietary. So if you're looking for a common name/model/part number for the individual pins/terminals, you won't find one.

There are many Chinese companies who make clones of these connectors (as a whole, which usually include the terminals), but more often than not they tend to just sell complete assembled cables. Some pre-assembled cables are better than others (particularly ones with proper shielding so that you don't get buzz/noise during screens which have lots of white on them). If you want to know what that means, do a little bit of research. You might still be able to find official (Nintendo-branded) multi-out cables that someone has laying around from old stock but I'm unsure; conveniently the multi-out connector was used on several different Nintendo consoles (SNES, N64, NES top-loader, AV Famicom, and Gamecube).

Summary: you're better off just buying a pre-made cable given that the connector and terminals/pins are proprietary.

The things you pulled out of the cable look similar to the folded metal springs inside a card edge connector, but I don't know of a name for that specific shape.

I think I'll buy this and wire it to some female RCA cable connectors. Then I won't have to gamble with the quality of the cables.

Another method is buying a cheap AV cable off eBay ($5 shipped) and using it just for the connector. I've done this a few times in the past. Sometimes the connectors are very cheaply made and cannot be opened easily without breaking them. Some connectors from the 90's have missing pins (only contain the pins they require - ie: composite video and audio, but missing RGB, sync and S-Video pins) but all the newly manufactured ones I've come across have all the pins. So your results may vary if you use this method.



I'm sick of poor quality cables. And not just for game consoles, just across the board. A few years ago, I resolved to make my own cables whenever possible. It's definitely the way to go!
