Issue with restoring Yoshi's Island cart
by on (#193416)
Hi. Several months ago I tried to remove mask rom from the Yoshi's Island PCB (Japanese version) but that way I have ripped the solder pad for the pin 33. Today I have decided that I'd like to put the mask rom back while sodlering a piece of wire between the damaged pin of the mask rom and the GSU-2 chip. I had traced the solder pad and realized that it connects to pin 4 of the GSU-2.

Unfortunately all I get now is black screen. I have tried to resolder all connections but had no luck. Am I doing something wrong or maybe the mask rom us busted?

Either one of your pins isn't soldered down very well, or you have more pad damage but don't know it.
Assuming your jumper wire is indeed good.

The mask roms are pretty robust. They can take a lot of punishment and still work.

Well, I have tried it second time. I completely desoldered the mask rom, cleaned everything, and then soldered it back. Didn't work. So I assume something is fried.

I'd picked up a YI cart from a hamfest some years ago and it wouldn't boot until I reflowed the solder on the SRAM.

Not that I have any reason to think that's what happened to yours, but maybe it's worth taking a look.

The game worked flawlesly when I had bought it. I'm pretty sure that the SRAM chip is soldered well.

I am a little sad that I have destroyed perfectly good game. Fortunately loose YI is pretty cheap.
