GQ-4X4 Rewriting 29F032B does not work
by on (#162005)
Hi,

after some years of inactivity I finally bought a GQ-4X (its the new version GQ-4X4) and I want to rewrite my 29f032 chips for updated translations or change the games.

I am using this adapter and followed the instrucations about the three extra pins:

http://www.mmmonkey.co.uk/programming-2 ... -on-gq-4x/

I soldered the SNES adapter boards out of the game modules and put it into the adapter (i build two different ones just to be sure I don't have any errors) but the USBPrg software does not even recognize the chips correctly as 29f032, i only get bogus ids like "4C34"...

I tried two different chips and their correct id won't get recognized, I tried two different adapters I built, but they return even different bogus ids.

I just wasted 5 hours and I don't know what is wrong :-(

Would be great if somebody could give me a tip what else could be wrong. Both chips work if I put them again in a game module, the SNES plays them without errors...
So I guess my adapters are somehow faulty...? Maybe someone could sell me an spare already finished adapter?

I could never get my GQ-4X to write 29F032-chips or 29F033-chips no matter what, so I bought a TL866CS-programmer and purchased a suitable adapter and it works great! Erasing, programming and verifying a chip takes around four and a half minutes - way faster than my old Willem programmer which took around 45 minutes (!!) to do the same thing. The MiniPro-software (comes with the programmer) doesn't officially support writing AM29F032-chips, but if you select MBM29F033 and then uncheck the "Check Device ID"-box it works flawlessly.

Good luck!

Was nobody successful writing to the 29F032B with a GQ-4?
I only bought the programmer for that :-( Since no refund is possible I really want to try further.

Should i just buy the official adapters

ADP-077
ADP-082

?

Slightly off-topic but I wrote a 29F032 programmer for the Arduino Mega 2560, it works surprisingly reliable. It also does 29F1610 and 29L3211. You can get Arduino Megas for $6 from China including shipping. Making this probably the cheapest way to program those flashroms.

You can find the sketch attached here.
You don't need all the pcbs in the pictures since you can just directly wire the 29F032(or a Zif socket for that matter) to the Arduino Mega's pins, the pinout is detailed in the Arduino sketch.

Double check your top pins that need to be moved in for a gq-4x.

Thanks for the hot tip. I'm ordering an adapter now.

Hi,

thanks for your reply! What do mean exactly?
The positions of the pins inside the gq-4x or the soldering?

Do you have a working adapter?

Looks like a little bit to much solder on the pins. Please use a desoldering wick to got better points.

The adapter loosk fine, but remove the chassie of the gq4x. Then disconnect the cables from pins and connect A19 - A2ß and A21 directly to the header of gq4x.

It should work so. IF the ID is wrong, something with the soldering is incorrect.

Thanks
