Can you take pictures of the Namcot 129 PCBs and attach them here, please?

Very curious! I wonder what causes the strange sound in Mappy Kids?

Was the N129 used in any games for sound? Or was it only sound-capable but never utilized?

I'm also curious if you can obtain a TNS-HFC cartridge and play Mappy Kids NSF with a N163 cartridge and again with a N129 to record and document differences.

As far as we know, no games used the 129 for sound. Probably because the audio hardware was buggy, as is shown by the recordings.
Naruko's copy of Star Wars has the 129 bypassed (0 ohm resistor from "audio from 2a03" to "audio to rf")

If anyone wants to send me a N129 cart, I'd be happy to record some stuff from my TNS-HFC3.

EDIT: Star Wars seems to be pretty cheap on eBay. Maybe I can get my own cart. Do I have to mod it before I can record anything? I'm seeing stuff about resistors but I'm not certain I understand.

I don't know how the TNS-HFC3 works, but, if the cartridge is just inserted directly into a famicom, the AUDIO FROM 2A03 and AUDIO TO RF signals are just jumpered, and the 129's DAC can't drive it at all.

If the HFC3 can isolate the cartridge's sound hardware from the 2A03, then you don't need to modify the cartridge.

If you do have to modify it, you'll need to cut a trace, and then if you want to mix 2A03 sound, you'll need to solder a resistor in.

This is the trace:

Apparently only the earliest Star Wars cartridges have a 129, though; the ones that BootGod has doesn't.
