Questions about NES donor carts for reproductions
by on (#80124)
Hey guys, I have some questions regarding some NES reproductions I'm looking to get and about donor boards.

Basically, I'd like to know the significance of the final two digits in board types.

For example, I have a copy of Infiltrator I'd like converted into Rockman 5 Endless. Infiltrator is

NES-TLROM-02, but Rockman 5 Endless uses NES-TLROM-03 or 04. What is the difference? Does this affect anything? In other words, can I use Infiltrator as a donor cartridge for Rockman 5 Endless?

What about Faxanadu NES-SGROM-02 to Rockman 2 Endless SGROM-03?

When information gathered from the NEScartDB, I've come up with the following. Please let me know if this is correct or I am mistaken in some parts.

Game I want > Required board > Donor cart
The Goonies 1 NROM-256-02 10 Yard Fight
Dig Dug NROM-256-02 Gyromite
MegaMari UNROM-07 Renegade
Rockman 2 EL SGROM-02 Faxanadu
Rockman 3 EL TLROM-03 Dirty Harry
Rockman 4 EL TGROM-01 Ninja Crusaders
Rockman 5 EL TLROM-03 Infiltrator or Super Spike V'Ball
Metorid X SNROM-03 Spot the videogame
Hammerin' Harry TLROM-03 Mendel Palace
Magical Dorophie TLROM-03 Mendel Palace
Mario 256 Worlds NROM-256-01 Super Mario Bros.
Bio Force Ape TSROM-08 Where's Waldo?
Gradius 1.5 Arcade TLROM-03 Base Wars

thanks for any help.

Revision. I don't think there's any technical differences, but I know the boards are just different in the physical layout. Edit: Yeah, and the capacitor on SRAM boards to save.

I have only looked into this for NROM-256 boards, but for those they are all extremely similar and all have the same pinout. Some have slightly different traces, some have the decoupling capacitor in a different spot, or of a different value.

They are similar enough that my rewiring tutorial is valid for all of them.

There is two "major" difference I've evern noted in same-class boards :

NES-SNROM-04 / HVC-SNROM-08 and upper added an additional 2.2 uF decoupling capacitor on the WRAM VCC line, making it less likely to accidentally erase saves.

NES-CNROM-06 and upper removed the support of the useless security diodes which was there in NES-CN-ROM-256-01 to -05
